Why good technology decisions are difficult

Weighting matters more than scoring

One of the most common scorecard mistakes is assigning every category the same importance. Equal weighting may appear neutral, but it often produces a result that does not reflect the organization's real priorities.

A fast-growing business may assign more weight to scalability, integration, and implementation speed. A scorecard is only as strong as the process around it

Include implementation and operating stakeholders

Technology selection teams often include executives, procurement, technology leaders, and business sponsors, but underrepresent the people who will implement, operate, support, and use the solution.

Including these perspectives early can reveal practical constraints that would otherwise emerge after the contract is signed.

Document significant judgement

The final decision should not depend exclusively on the calculated total. There may be valid reasons to select a solution that does not achieve the highest mathematical score, but those reasons should be explicit, evidence-based, and approved through the appropriate governance process.

Too many criteria
